Hello everyone, introduction and my first three questions

Hello there!

Guix newbie here. I posted once before,
but I think that was an attempt to run guix on a vm.
I can’t even recall it anymore.

Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know I joined the Guix bandwagon since yesterday as I’ve been told many times now that Manjaro is no longer the shining Arch on the hilltop that it used to be.

I could have jumped to EndeavourOS, but I decided to look around if there was any other linux distro I would be interested in, especially when it comes to things that I consider full progress, so something like the Cosmic DE is nice, because I consider rust to be a superior programming language to most programming languages, but I still consider modular design a bigger priority ever since I started using Manjaro really. Thus ‘OS with new features but without systemd’ was on my list and well, Guix seemed like the perfect candidate.

Like, I’m interested in how to set up like it was like Manjaro.

  • XFCE with the Manjaro look and feel, because that looks nice
  • Icecat, I used firefox regularly, but if it won’t be too much of a hassle, I’ll take this.
  • Icedove, I used thunderbird regularly, but if it won’t be too much of a hassle, I’ll take this.
  • Nextcloud client, because I don’t trust companies handling my personal information
  • A redshift program, so my eyes will know when it’s time to go to bed.
  • KeepassXC for my passwords
  • Kitty (the terminal), because it’s how I always imagined terminal tabs should look like and work.
  • Virt-manager for whenever I want to run VMs, although I wonder if I still be needing this.
  • Telegram-client, my friends use this.
  • Neovim, because I like opening up a text editor that starts at the exact line of the error given from a script I wrote and tried to run.
  • Flatpak
    • Microsoft teams, because someone cannot communicate with me any other way, we’ve tried.
    • freetube, because I can’t find a way to watch youtube videos on icecat.

So my first question is, am I at the right place for asking questions about how to set up my machine the way I like it?

Is it a good idea to ask lots of questions in one thread, or should I open a new one for each little issue I encounter?

I’ll ask one little machine setup issue for now. I’ve managed to add a whiskers menu, but I want to change the icon to that of the guix logo, but I can’t find a guix logo. Where can I find a guix icon?

Answering my third question:

guix package -i guix-icons

And then search for guix-icon.svg in one of the /gnu/store packages.

Answering my other two questions:

I self-decided on a yes and yes.

My guess is that you can just lift the XFCE Manjaro dot files from your old installs ~/.config if instantiated or in /etc or /usr if it falls back to the defaults.

I managed this by installing the following:

guix package -i font-google-noto matcha-theme papirus-icon-theme breeze

and then opening up Applications→Parameters→Appearance to edit the following:

  • Style: Match-sea
    • XFWM Style
      • Theme: Matcha-sea
      • Title font: Noto Sans ExtraCondensed 10
  • Icons: Papirus-Maia
  • Font
    • Default Font: Noto Sans ExtraCondensed 10
    • Default fixed font: Monospace Regular 10
