Introduction from Dan

Hi, everyone. Dan here.

I’ve been on the forum for a while now, mostly lurking every now and then. Figured it’s probably time to chime in with a quick intro.

I started watching @daviwil ‘s videos on Odysee a few years ago on and off. Prior to that, I got fed up with Windows around 2019 and switched to Ubuntu. I went down the typical normie privacy/floss rabbit holes over the years and eventually landed on Arch.

I first learned emacs in college around 2005 (ya, I’m old) and stopped using it after graudation since my employer at the time was fully bought into Microsoft.

Still using Microsoft stuff at work. But on my home machine, I’m using vanilla emacs. My most used packages are elfeed, notmuch, org, eww. Working on learning Guile well enough before installing guix on my foreign distro. Eventually I’ll make the switch to guix on bare metal.

Looking forward to seeing what’s up with everyone.

This is the way of it. Welcome!

Hi Dan,

Welcome.

When using guix as a foreign distro there crop up sometimes issues due to conflicts or mismatches with the host operating system.

These usually are logically when looking at them with 20/20 hindsight, but can be baffling on the other side of the AHAH! moment.

I recommend to have a GUIX full system somewhere to compare things when you’re stuck to get data points if it is a packaging issue, cross package confusion, environment variables missing, … I think this will shorten the learning curve.

I had some such problems and a look into the env helped fixing the problem with the GUI no longer starting. I can also second the use of a VD or a second hand ThinkPad to play with a full GUIX system.
