I realized that there are now some memes/tropes that are a bit unknown to new folks. So let’s try to collect them.
I guess having this as a wiki would be easier to collect, but the Wiki has no instructions on how to add new content at the moment, which makes it probably even harder for new viewers to enhance. Also, the wiki isn’t linked from the main systemcrafters site.

Sherri
Sherri M.6.S.191?DRML
was a YouTube viewer that jumped into Friday streams on multiple occasions. The first confirmed stream was https://youtu.be/nXu32MHBDqA?t=2302. Sherri usually went completely off-topic, only occasionally hitting the stream’s content. The consensus on Discord/YouTube chat was that Sherri is a bot, used by someone who tried the MIT’s Machine Learning course (which uses the same number).
Sherri was only seen for a few weeks and then went completely silent.
Stream Delayed by Guix Pull
<zororg`> live? [16:20] <daviwil> One sec <ashraz> That was a great stream, see you all next week again <zororg`> sheesh <einar_m> lol <zororg`> I asked because of some ChanServ message above.. [16:21] <morganw> Maybe it was a dual-laptop setup created by splitting the Framework laptop into two laptops. <daviwil> That would be pretty impressive *** sc-s-copy has joined channel #systemcrafters-live <sc-s-copy> Beep boop, ready for action. <cow_2001> woooo! [16:22] <altomcat> hit by the guix pull syndrom ? <ashraz> Never patch on stream day [16:23] <snamellit> It is part of the charm...
<daviwil> OK, almost ready ;) [07:35] <trev> guix pull <trev> right now
The weekly Friday streams are scheduled for UTC 16:00, but they usually start five to ten minutes late. However, there was an infamous much longer delay [citation needed] when a last minute guix pull
too its sweet time and threw the schedule “a bit” off. Since then, it has been a common meme to either a) blame guix pull
for the stream being late or b) suggest to David to use guix pull
during the stream (which would more or less abort it). The latter was actually a major issue when David had only one streaming machine. With now two machines at hand, it’s a lot less of an issue, although we would then only see guix pull
running…
thank you leftpad
Originated from a stream on Feb 2, 2024 (Craftable Terminal Workspaces with Zellij - System Crafters):
<ashraz> daviwil: You got a new subscriber on Twitch :) [17:28] <purplg> yeah dependencies in rust get really out of hand really fast <trev> ashraz: me too, friends. project at work has 2800 deps <ashraz> (You ought to thank them) <languidnights> the rust community has too many microlibraries for my taste; I get that some of the functions of, say, md5 can be extracted but the md5 libraries aren't /that/ big to bother <alternateved> ashraz: haha <ashraz> I'll just say: "leftpad" <!-- David thanks "leftpad" for subscribing live on stream --> <ashraz> Nooooo. <cmack> lol [17:29] <ashraz> Nooooo that was about the dependency stuff :D <alternateved> Hahah :D <trev> tmux just mirrors <alternateved> Thank you leftpad <purplg> yay leftpad!! <purplg> I'm changing my name <ashraz> And thus the tradition to always thank "leftpad" for new subscribers stated <alternateved> That should be part of a guidelines <ashraz> alternateved: "We as a community come together in the honor of our lord an savior, leftpad" <alternateved> ashraz: perfect! [17:31]
“thank you leftpad” originated from two discussions being intersected at probably the best (or worst) possible time. On the one hand, we have ashraz telling @daviwil that there has been a new Twitch subscriber. On the other hand, ashraz laments the woes of dependency management in Rust and other “lets create a package for minimal functionality” ecosystems with @purplg and @trev and points to the infamous npm left-pad incident - Wikipedia. However, in doing so, ashraz accidentally indicated that the new subscriber was called “leftpad”, and therefore David thanked the npm package live on stream, which immediately got caught by both @alternateved and @purplg.
leftpad’s subscriber status got questioned during the stream, and more or less all issues of this and the following few streams have been blamed on leftpad. Nowadays, if you see “Thank you leftpad”, it’s usually because something went unexpectedly wrong; or because the IRC user “leftpad” has trolled a bit.
Leftpad
First time on stream on Feb 9, 2024:
<alternateved> thank leftpad <leftpad> alternateved: You're welcome!
<daviwil> !leftpad [18:29] <crafter-bot> Thank you leftpad <leftpad> The !leftpad command has not been enabled in this channel. Please ask your channel operator to enable !leftpad features. <leftpad> (Just kidding, carry on )
Leftpad is yet another alternative account of ashraz. It was created during the “thank you leftpad” incident. Originally only meant for an automatic “You’re welcome!” message whenever someone posts a sarcastic “thank you leftpad” (if something goes wrong), it’s nowadays the antithesis of ashraz’ advises. Where you might consider ashraz’ advise and ashraz tries to be helpful, leftpad will occasionally drop destructive advises. Do not follow leftpad’s advise! Some of ashraz more sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek comments are now posted under the leftpad alias.
David goes fishing
On #systemcrafters
, original date a bit unknown, early Sep 2024. Was confirmed by @alternateved to originated by @summeremacs on Sep 12, 2024, and was picked up in the stream
2024-09-12, log provided by @alternateved, thanks!
[19:30:07] <SummerEmacs> don't you know? daviwil is a simple fisherman. a simple greek >fisherman.
<mretka> And I'm gonna get myself a bass this next week <mretka> Finally <mretka> lol glenneth <cow_2001> mretka: oh, thought you're in the mood for a rocking chair <mretka> Ah yeah, you work on Saturdays, right? [14:54] <mretka> cow_2001: I'll be in the mood for that later today <mretka> Gonna relax in the park later <glenneth> I do. Mr Big are a great band <mretka> \m/ <glenneth> Bass? You're taking up fishing? <mretka> HAHAHAHAHA [15:55] <mretka> No, I'm not like daviwil in that regard :P
<daviwil> are we talking about sports ball in here? <ashraz> daviwil: No, fishing. <daviwil> Ain't nobody fishing in here <Naokotani> speaking of fishing, daviwil are you any good at catfish noodling? <daviwil> I have no idea what that is [14:08]
<alternateved> I have no idea how daviwil can make time for streams and maintaining his personas when he's fishing so much [18:27] <alternateved> fishing is life, eh? [18:28] <SummerEmacs> it's what he does best. <SummerEmacs> he's legendary on the isle of crete <SummerEmacs> davidos the fish they call him
Summer I’m surprised you didn’t use this as an opportunity to say that I’m going to put my PC into an acrylic watertight case and then put it into the water next to my Beachside home where I’m fishing every day
– David Wilson during the stream
At some point, @summeremacs started the rumor that @daviwil is a fisherman. This lead to the community occasionally asking for “fishing content” and pointing out that Emacs is just another lure[citation needed].
The IRC bridge and sc-s-copy
First time on Oct 11, 2024.
*** sc-s-copy (~user@user/sc-s-copy) has joined channel #systemcrafters-live <sc-s-copy> [Ed Bowler @ YT]: David hit M-e to get to the end of the sentence. <!-- David on stream: is anyone copying chat onto IRC? --> <ashraz> Yes... I need to write a bot...
<BigEatie> Is sc-s-copy a boy? <BigEatie> Err...a bot*? <sc-s-copy> robin: I'm copying messages from YT/Twitch manually (secondary keyboard of ashraz)
<leftpad> You were calling? <gan_ainm> ashraz: how do you reply to the forwarded posts? <Naokotani> dont forget to subscribe and smash that like button everyone! (almost forgot) [17:26] <ashraz> gan_ainm: It's a one way road, since David answers them on stream, so they get their answer :) <!-- snip --> <ashraz> gan_ainm: The forwarding is just to a) show the messages on the chat-overlay on stream (otherwise they would get skipped) and b) to decrease the number of chats David has to monitor (until he fixes the IRC bridge) <!-- snip --> <gan_ainm> ashraz: nice hack!
<!-- in a particularly busy stream --> * sc-s-copy thanks the god that alex joined here and can finally stop copying things
sc-s-copy
is one of the three(?) IRC accounts ashraz uses during stream. It’s a name stands for “System Crafters Stream Copy”. It should have been “System Crafters Chat Copy” (and ashraz occasionally uses the wrong nick), but the typo has stuck.
Previously, the sc-live-bot
would copy messages from Twitch into IRC. But the Twitch bridge broke and the bot has not worked for a while [citation needed]. Given that some of the messages on YT and Twitch were missed by David at that time, ashraz created a quick workaround by manually copying messages under the sc-s-copy
nick.
This has been going well for a while, but the more recent Friday streams have more than 100 viewers, which puts a bit on a toll on sc-s-copy
. With this, sc-s-copy
also started to include some fun facts, for example reaching a certain milestone during the stream (like surpassing 100 viewers).

sc-s-copy is biased and will not copy all messages. Blatant memes or tolling messages are not copied, for example. Discussions that are completely internal to either Twitch/YouTube are not copied. If you want to see your message on the stream, then join #systemcrafters-live. |
ashraz/sc-s-copy being a bit overwhelmed with copying chat messages, following the discussions and occasionally dropping links to manuals has become a meme in the recent streams(Feb, 2025).
Bye SummerEmacs
Originated from a stream on Nov 8, 2024.
<!-- unrelated messages removed --> <acdw> ok town hall time, bye fam *** acdw (~acdw@user/acdw) has left channel #systemcrafters-live: smell ya later <ashraz> bye SummerEmacs <ashraz> *bye acdw <ashraz> Interesting that ac<tab> auto-completed to summeremACs <alternateved> bye SummerEmacs <ashraz> ... that's gonna be another leftpad moment, ain't it? <BigEatie> Hmm, that is weird, ac autocompletes to SummerEmacs for me too. *** leftpad (~user@user/leftpad) has joined channel #systemcrafters-live <alternateved> BigEatie: for me too [16:53] <Naokotani> trollin' <wolfjb> bye SummerEmacs <alternateved> thank you leftpad <leftpad> You're welcome! <Naokotani> M-x bye-summer <leftpad> Naokotani: [it is now autumn]
Particularly busy example on Jan 24, 2025
*** leftpad (~user@user/leftpad) has quit: Quit: You're welcome! <Lionyx> take care man <glenneth> thanks folx o7 *** bchall (~user@67-211-144-2.unassigned.ntelos.net) has quit: Quit: rcirc on GNU Emacs 29.4 <alternateved> Bye SummerEmacs *** sc-s-copy (~user@user/sc-s-copy) has quit: Quit: I'm freeeee <snamellit> bye! <waxcatape> Bye! <einar_m> Bye! <altomcat> thanks bye! <Lionyx> bye SummerEmacs
On November 8, 2025, acdw
left the stream around the 50 minute mark. @ashraz tried to snipe in a bye acdw
, but acdw
already left the channel. With that, ashraz’ auto-completion completed ac
to SummerEmacs, which @alternateved immediately jumped on. @wolfjb and Naokotani also joined in.
With that, it has become more or less custom to say Bye SummerEmacs
whenever a user leaves the #systemcrafters-live
chat, but we recently learned that @summeremacs actually reads all those notifications, so maybe we should tone it down.
visible-bell
inducing seizures
First confirmed mention on Nov 15, 2024.
<Naokotani> (setq visible-bell epileptic-seizure-mode) [17:31]
<leftpad> Most people who watch this now have a seizure due to visible-bell!
This is most often called out on-stream by @trev, which is why David usually refers to @trev on any blinking lights.
