# Forum request: Enable mailing list mode

Hello. Can admins of this discourse forum enable **Mailing List Mode ?** I am in lots of other programming communities that use discourse forum software, and keeping up with all of them is much easier via my notmuch email client. On these forums there’s an option that I can select in `preferences/emails` of my account settings, but in systemcrafters forum, that option is not visible.
Enabling **Mailing List Mode** allows me to read this forum inside emacs notmuch, and send replies to the threads from inside emacs notmuch.

Any news @benoitj ? I don’t want to pester you, but I just had to type in [a long text on the forum web UI](https://forum.systemcrafters.net/t/ai-agentic-programming-where-to-begin/1993), and my browser crawled to a halt alongside with my CPU spinning wildly. I was really afraid to lose the long text to a web browser crash.
Notmuch on emacs, in contrast, is a much better place to type in long essays to the forum.

Got it. Most of the requirements are already in place, as faras I can see: I receive email notifications to the replies to the threads I’ve started. I can reply to these notifications via email and they show up on the forum. Meaning: email replies are already supported out of the box. I just want this feature to be generalized, with mailing list mode of discourse: I should get every new reply and every new topic on the forum as an email (I have notmuch setup so that it sieves the incoming email to their proper searches) so that I am aware of the activity on the forum without ever checking the forum’s webUI.

I, humbly, would like to ping again the forum admins on this.
Some quick notes (_to the degree I understand discourse forum software_) for whenever @daviwil has a moment to glance at this to minimize any administrative friction:
- **Zero Infrastructure Overhead:** Since inbound and outbound email notifications are already functional on the platform, the underlying mail server integration is already there.
- **Single Toggle Change:** Enabling this simply requires checking the `mailing_list_mode_allowed` option within the Discourse site settings. It introduces no additional maintenance burden or security implications.
Allowing **text-based** , **local-first interaction** via tools like `notmuch.el` aligns with the core philosophy of System Crafters community, that is, reducing reliance on heavy web UIs in favor of efficient, keyboard-driven computing environments. Looking forward to the update whenever the administrative bandwidth allows.

Hello, even though there are some discussions I wanna attend, unfortunately I’m unable to do that, because I have to open a huge ugly web browser each time, which discourages me to attend or follow the forum. I would appreciate to have a mailing list feature which is already built-in in discourse software, so that I can follow and attend this forum from my Emacs notmuch email client.

Is there another forum admin I can raise this request with? My follow ups with @benoitj has been un-responded so far.
If there’s another admin who can enable this feature, I would like to implore them, enable mailing list mode, even if for testing, and they can disable the feature later on, if enabling it is too disruptive to the forum, or too burdensome for the admins of this forum.

Hi @shinkansen,
the decision has to be made by @daviwil.
So you need to implore David 😃
I did follow-up with him and he was looking into it. that is all I know at this point. Until he reviews it, and accept/enable the feature, there is nothing else I can do.
As a note, discourse also support RSS, that might be a best 2nd for what you are looking for.

Sorry for taking a while to get back. I’ve just made it possible for users to turn on mailing list mode. There’s a limited number of emails the forum can send per month so I’ll have to keep an eye on how many e-mails this results in so that we don’t go over plan limits.
Let me know if you have any trouble turning it on, I haven’t tried it yet.

It’s great that you’re enabling the community to access how they like, web, Emacs package, now email. That’s awesome! Hope folks are stepping up and chipping in to help with the hosting costs, especially if it’ll increase based on usage.

Thanks David. I just turned on the Mailing List mode. It is great to
be able to follow all of the forum from my `notmuch.el` in Emacs!
